SRINAGAR — Popular Islamic speaker Mufti Ismail Menk, who was on a two-day visit to Kashmir, on Friday performed the nikah of Yawar Mir, son of former minister and senior leader of Apni Party Mohammad Dilwar Mir.
Earlier, there were reports that he has visited the valley to attend the marriage ceremony of Kashmiri businessman Feroz Peerzada’s daughter.
Sources confirmed that the reason behind his ‘private’ visit was to perform the nikah of Yawar Mir.
They said that Menk also gave a sermon on the occasion.
Notably, Menk has a huge following on social media. He broke the news of his Kashmir visit through his Instagram account on Thursday.
The Zimbabwean scholar is followed by millions for his Islamic and motivational speeches.
However, his visit to Kashmir to solemnize the marriage of a pro-India politician’s son has generated a debate and humour on social media.
“This man earned fame through Islam and has a responsibility to respect Islamic teachings. He is not some ordinary man. He is a Mufti [cleric] followed by millions only for his Muslimness. So, if he sits with murderers of Muslims, he needs to be called out,” wrote a user on Twitter.
“He joined Apni Party. He will fight from Lasjan constituency, as per latest reports,” another user wrote sarcastically.
