SHOPIAN — The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday morning claimed to have killed the militant who was allegedly involved in firing upon and injuring a civilian in Chitragam Zainapora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday evening.
“Last night, recently active terrorist who was earlier an OGW (over-ground worker) and also involved in drugs, namely Anayat Ashraf Dar, son of Ashraf Dar, a resident of Keshwa Shopian, fired upon a civilian, Jeewer Hameed Bhat, who got seriously injured and is still hospitalised,” police said in a statement on Twitter.
The police claimed that Anayat also used to threaten other people in and around his village with his illegally acquired weapons.
“After thorough interrogation of several suspects after the attack and input from sources, a cordon-and-search-operation (CASO) was launched at village Keshwa. While laying cordon he (the militants) fired upon joint search party,” the statement added.
Police said all civilians in the houses near to the target area were later evacuated.
“He was offered to surrender for [the] whole night, but he didn’t surrender. Later on, during [an] encounter, the said newly active terrorist got neutralised. One pistol and ammunition were also recovered from his possession,” the statement added.
