SRINAGAR — Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday imposed restrictions in and around the commercial hub Lal Chowk of Srinagar city to foil the Muharram processions.
Official sources said that in view of the Muharram procession that was scheduled to be taken out from Abi Guzar area today, restrictions were imposed in Maisuma, Abi Guzar, TRC, Dalgate, Budshah bridge, Gowkadal and Kralkhud areas.
Notably, Muharram processions from Abi Guzar are banned since 1989 when a popular insurgency against Indian rule broke out in Kashmir.
Pertinently, the government had earlier announced that Muharram processions will be allowed to carry out this year after 30 years.
However, after the move was questioned by the Shia leaders, the government stated that concerned Deputy Commissioners in each district will have the final say in their own domains after reviewing the situation.
