SRINAGAR — After a sustained suspense over the issue, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday announced the cancellation of annual yatra (pilgrimage) in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The annoucement was made through the official Twitter handle of the office of the J&K Lieutenant Governor.
The tweet mentioned that the decision to cancel the pilgrimage was taken after “threadbare discussion with Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board members”.
“However, all the traditional religious rituals shall be performed at the Holy Cave Shrine as per past practice, he said.
“It’s important to save people’s lives. So, it is not advisable to hold and conduct this year’s pilgrimage in the larger public interest,” it tweeted. (KNO)
