SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday arrested a person accused of rape in Srinagar. The associate of the accused is still at large while a hunt has been launched to nab him.
Sources said that a Bakarwal family from Chenab Valley registered a complaint at Police Station Saddar Srinagar that two youth — one from Pulwama and another from Ganderbal — sexually assaulted a girl at Padshahi Bagh area on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Taking cognizance of the complaint, police arrested one of the accused, who is also from the Gujjar community, while his associate is absconding.
Police sources said that initial investigation reveals that the accused were in touch with the girl over phone.
When contacted, a top police official said that Police Station Saddar received the complaint from the family two days ago and accordingly an FIR was registered and the accused was arrested.
He said one of the accused is a resident of Ganderbal while the other is from South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
“Investigation has been set into motion and all details about the incident are being collected,” he said, adding efforts are on to arrest the other accused. (KNT)
