Srinagar: Panic gripped Narbal area of Srinagar outskirts on Monday after a gunshot was heard.
Police officials said a suspicious Maruti car ignored government forces’ signal to stop, leading to chaos in the area and causing a minor injury to a civilian, KNO reported.
Talking to reporters at the site of the incident, SP West (Srinagar) Shahzad Salahi said that police had inputs about the movement of militants in the area.
“A suspicious Maruti car was directed to stop at Narbal, but it ignored our signal and gained speed. There was a little chaos at the stop. A civilian, who was selling corn at the spot, sustained injuries on his face while running for cover,” Salahi said.
He said the Maruti vehicle managed to flee from the spot. “The area has been cordoned off and searches launched.”
However, SP Srinagar, Dr Haseeb Mughal gave a slightly different version of the incident.
He told KNS that there was no report of any attack on forces but it was the service rifle of one of the government forces personnel that went off ‘accidentally’.
He said a civilian was injured due to ‘stampede’ amid the ensuing chaos.
